ENGLISH Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspurs could be on the verge of signing Super Eagles midfielder Raphael Onyedika ahead of the forthcoming 2025/26 season following the appointment of Thomas Frank as the new head coach.
Mr Frank, 51, who until last week was the manager of Brentford, has been named as the Spurs new head coach and his immediate task is to strengthen his squad. Spurs finished a disappointing 16th on the Premier League last season but have qualified for the Uefa Champions League having won the Europa Cup, so desperately need more qualify.
Ange Postecoglou was also sacked as Spurs manager because the club's management were not impressed with the team's style of play and the board will expect Danish coach Frank to enhance standards. To do that, he would have to make some changes to the squad, meaning one or two players might exit Tottenham to make room for incomings.
For instance, Brentford's Cameroon international Bryan Mbeumo looked like he was destined for Manchester United but Tottenham are looking to hijack the deal. Also, Mr Frank is believed to have informed Tottenham that he wants a new defensive midfielder as part of the demands he made before signing for the club.
If Tottenham are looking for a new defensive midfielder, Onyedika might just be their man. He has proven to be a top player at Club Brugge over the past three years since he joined from Danish club Midtjylland, featuring in 141 games, with six goals and four assists to his name.
He is physical and can pass the ball really well and Onyedika is a fine tackler, with excellent work rate to go with it. Onyedika would be a good buy for Tottenham due to his qualities and he will come quite cheap as he is valued at only around €20m on Transfermarkt.
Although he is 24, he has a lot of experience in Europe, as he has played in the Uefa Champions League and has also won the league with Club Brugge. Last month, West ham indicated they might be interested in Onyedika but so far, no firm bid has been made to Brugge for his services.
