As we celebrate 65 years of independence later this year, we need to launch a Nigeria Pulling Her Weight Globally campaign that would see us stop being a parasitic and dependent nation

Ayo Akinfe

[1] For me this is a very straightforward matter. Nigeria accounts for 2.5% of the world’s population, so should account for 2.5% of global industrial output

[2] One in 40 humans is Nigerian, so one in every 40 industrial goods should be manufactured in Nigeria

[3] This means that one in every 40 automobiles out there should be made in Nigeria

[4] One in every aircraft in the sky should be manufactured in Nigeria

[5] We should account for at least 2.5% of global food production

[6] At least 2.5% of all pharmaceuticals should be manufactured in Nigeria

[7] At least 2.5% of all military armaments should be manufactured in Nigeria

[8] No less than 2.5% of all trains should be manufactured in Nigeria

[9] At least 2.5% of all global patents should be Nigerian

[10] I would love it if President Tinubu gives a solemn pledge that having hit 65, Nigeria will account for at least 2.5% of global production of the following 10 items:

[1] Electric automobiles

[2] Shipping vessels

[3] Medical doctors

[4] Pharmaceutical drugs

[5] Aircrafts and helicopters

[6] Military hardware

[7] Household consumer goods like TV sets, washing machines, fridge-freezers, toasters, tumble dryers, irons, cookers, microwaves, etc

[8] Mobile phones, laptop computers and iPads

[9] Agricultural output

[10] Clothing and footwear
