FORMER Nigerian president Muhammadu Buhari is receiving emergency medical treatment in the UK after falling ill to a point whereby the deterioration in his health led to him being flown abroad for urgent attention.
President Buhari, 82, who was in office between 2015 and 2023, initially left Nigeria in April for what was initially described as a routine medical check-up. However, he has remained in the UK due to complications that emerged shortly after his arrival, according to sources close to his family.
Apparently, last week, the former leader was admitted to an Intensive Care Unit but has since been moved out as his situation has improved a bit. President Buhari’s extended stay abroad caused him to miss key events, including the 50th anniversary celebration of the Economic Community of West African States last month.
Since leaving office, President Buhari has resided in his hometown of Daura in Katsina State and this is the first time he has been away for any extended period of time. He has not returned to Nigeria since departing in April, prompting fresh speculation about his health and a possible return date.
During his presidency between 2015 and 2023, President Buhari made several trips to the UK for medical treatment, drawing criticism over his prolonged absences and the state of Nigeria’s healthcare infrastructure. Notably, one of his stays in 2017 lasted over 100 days, leading to protests outside the house where he was staying in London.
While some sources indicate that President Buhari is responding to treatment, details about his current condition and the facility managing his care remain undisclosed. As of now, there has been no official communication from the Nigerian government regarding the former leader's health status.
