TWO members of the Super Eagles are set to join English Premier League clubs today before the closing of the transfer window this evening as Uche Christantus is poised to put pen to a deal with Crystal Palace while Samuel Chukwueze is poised to sign for Fulham.
Typical of deadline day, there is always a lot of last minute activity among Europe's clubs but yesterday, Palace agreed a deal with Christantus's Spanish club Getafe, paving the way for him to fly in for a medical today. Fulham too have managed to reach a deal with Chukwueze's Italian club AC Milan, allowing him to join compatriots Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi at Craven Cottage.
Chukwueze, 26, will no doubt now report late to the Super Eagles camp meeting in Nigeria for two World Cup qualifiers later this week as he is currently in London for his medical. Fulham's manager Marco Silva, has been looking to strengthen his attack of late and has been scouring the market for wide players in recent weeks.
It appears that Fulham will now take Chukwueze on loan for the season with an option to buy at the end of the 2025/26 campaign. Chukwueze, who joined Milan from Villarreal in July 2023, struggled to replicate his La Liga form in Serie A, managing just three goals in the division last season.
A graduate of Diamond Football Academy in Nigeria, Chukwueze burst onto the scene as part of the Golden Eaglets squad that lifted the Fifa U17 World Cup in 2015. Since then, he has gone on to record 80 goal contributions in 277 club appearances for Villarreal and Milan, while on the international stage, he has earned 46 caps for Nigeria, scoring seven goals.
Crystal Palace for their party have pulled off a major coup in the transfer market after convincing Christantus to join them following a failed move to join Wolves. A creative playmaker, Christantus, 22, is also expected to undergo his medical today after the two clubs reached a verbal agreement on his transfer.
Christantus was initially reluctant to move to England at this stage of his career, preferring to remain in Spain for at least another season. However, Palace manager Oliver Glasner and Getafe president Ángel Torres managed to convince him to change his mind as the Spanish club needed to sell him due to their financial constraints.
Mr Glasner convinced the player that Selhurst Park would be the right platform to continue his development. Before agreeing to the transfer, Uche reportedly discussed the move with Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle, who assured him he had enough time to sort out his future before linking up with the national team for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and South Africa.
On Friday, Super Eagles striker Tolu Arokodare reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers that will see him move from Belgian side Genk in a five year deal worth €27m. With the transfer deadline not closing until 7pm this evening, one or two more Nigerian players might still sign deals with English Premier League clubs.
