Alebiosu could be available for selection tonight as Dessers is set to be out for 10 weeks

SUPER Eagles fullback Ryan Alebiosu could be available for selection to today's match against the Black mambas of Mozambique after head coach Eric Chelle revealed that he has resumed training unlike team mate Cyril Dessers who will now be out for about 10 weeks.

Later on tonight, Nigeria faces Mozambique in the Round of 16 of the ongoing African Cup of Nations and in the run-up to the game there were a few injury concerns. Dessers had returned to his club Panathinaikos  after picking up a thigh injury, while Alebiosu sustained a leg wound in the last group game against Uganda and midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi had a cold.

Yesterday, however, Mr Chelle revealed that of the three of them, only Dessers will no longer play any part in the tournament. Providing an update at his pre-match press conference, Mr Chelle disclosed that the former Rangers forward Dessers, could be sidelined for a minimum of 10 weeks.

He added: "I heard some news this morning about Cyril. He has a big injury, maybe about 10 or 12 weeks. I am disappointed for him but we have to look in front of us. But for him, we have to play a game tomorrow.

"Ryan for his part will come back maybe in a few days because this injury was big too but he is fine. He is better every day so I think today he will start to run. We would see, day after day."

Nigeria will be eager to secure a positive result against Mozambique to book a place in the quarterfinals and avoid a repeat of the disappointment from the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon. During that tournament, the Super Eagles topped their group but were knocked out in the Round of 16 following a 1–0 loss to Tunisia.

Tonight's game will take place at the Fez Stadium with the match kicking off at 7pm GMT. Nigeria will be looking to win her fourth African Cup of Nations trophy as consolation for missing out on the 2026 World Cup.
