Would you not just love it if our National Assembly marked Mother’s Day with the passing of this Nigerian Gender Equality Bill 2026

[1] With the passing of this bill, Nigeria hereby scraps all laws which limit a woman's right to inherit family property

[2] Child marriages have henceforth become criminalised immediately with a minimum 10 year prison sentence for convicted criminals. This applies to anyone who marries a girl under the age of 16

[3] As from 2027, 50% women's representation will be guaranteed in all elected and appointed positions across Nigeria. This compels all states to make have of their appointees as electees women

[4] Free smear tests will be made available in all states of the federation

[5] Heavily subsidised childcare will be made available in all 774 local government areas of Nigeria to allow mothers return to work

[6] Paid maternity leave is compulsory

[7] Free breast cancer treatment will be available in every state capital

[8] The federal government will provide free maternity centres in every local government area

[9] Sex with a minor becomes statutory rape carrying a five year prison sentence. Also, free sanitary towels will be handed out to all Nigerian students

[10] Domestic violence carries a minimum of a five year sentence.
