Frank Onyeka gains promotion to English Premier League with Coventry City

SUPER Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has regained his Premier League status after his new club Coventry secured promotion from the English Championship last night with three games to go after playing a draw with Blackburn Rovers.

Onyeka, 28, is still technically a Brentford player but was sent out on loan to Coventry in January as the Sky Blues strengthened their team as part of the promotion push. Now, that they have been promoted, Coventry are almost certain to make the move permanent, as Onyeka has been an integral part of the team.

After 25 years in the second tier of English football, Coventry will be back in the top flight once again and Onyeka is hoping to be part of that experience. Onyeka, who joined Brentford in the summer of 2021, struggled for regular playing time this season, so will certainly cherish a move to the Midlands.

Yesterday at the CBS Arena, Blackburn took the lead early in the second half when Ryoya Morishita fired a low effort past goalkeeper Carl Rushworth, with the ball taking a slight deflection off defender Bobby Thomas. Coventry, however, responded late in the game, with Thomas redeeming himself by heading home a pinpoint delivery from Torp into the far top corner to restore parity and secure the vital point needed for promotion.

Prior to his move to Coventry, Onyeka made just six Premier League appearances for Brentford this season, registering a single assist. Onyeka's  contributions during the second half of the season proved valuable as Coventry secured promotion, triggering the buy option included in the original loan agreement.
