SUPER Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka has agreed a new three year deal with newly-promoted English Premier League side Coventry City that will keep him at the Building Society Arena until 2029.
After an absence of 25 years, Coventry have just won promotion back to the English Premier League after winning the English Championship. Onyeka, 28, joined Coventry on loan from London side Brentford in January and has been highly instrumental in getting the Sky Blues promoted to the top tier of English football once again.
Onyeka, who joined Brentford in the summer of 2021, struggled for regular playing time, which prompted him to move following an enquiry from Coventry manager Frank Lampard. With Coventry now crowned champions and starting to prepare for life in the top flight, Lampard has started assembling his squad, with Onyeka set to be his first signing.
Although the Sky Blues are yet to publish their retained list of players, Onyeka is expected to sign a three-year contract shortly with the club retaining the option to extend it by a further season. Brentford are set to receive around £9m for his services as the winter loan agreement between the two clubs included an obligation to buy clause dependent on promotion to the Premier League.
With that objective achieved, the clause has now been triggered and the terms of the deal were already agreed as far back as January. Since his transfer, Onyeka has made 14 Championship appearances for Coventry City, scoring once against Derby County, a strike that was shortlisted for the club's Goal of the Season award.
A permanent feature in the Super Eagles, Onyeka is a midfielder with proven Premier League experience, having made 75 appearances in the top-flight for Brentford during his time at the club. Onyeka joined Brentford from Danish side Midtjylland side on July 20 2021 for an undisclosed fee.
