Glasgow Rangers' Fernandez recovers from ankle injury ahead of weekend clash with St Mirren

SUPER Eagles centreback Emmanuel Fernandez is expected to return to training with his clubside Glasgow Rangers today after recovering from an ankle injury that has kept him out of action all week.

Fernandez, 24, picked up the injury during Rangers' 1-0 victory over Aberdeen in last Saturday's Premier Sports Cup semi-final at Hampden Park. It had been feared that he might have been out of action for a weeks and could even miss Nigeria's forthcoming international fixtures taking place later this month.

However, Rangers manager Derek McInnes, has offered an encouraging update, revealing that the defender is expected to resume training ahead of Saturday's fixture. Fernandez's condition initially raised concerns about his availability for Rangers' Scottish Premiership encounter against St Mirren this weekend.

Mr McInnes said: "Fernandez, his ankle was a bit of a mess after the game on Saturday. He twisted it but he's due to train tomorrow and will be fine for the game on Saturday."

This positive development will be a relief for Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle, who is preparing to name his squad for Nigeria's crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Tanzania. Nigeria's Super Eagles are scheduled to welcome Tanzania to the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo on November 13 before travelling to Dar es Salaam for the return encounter on November 17.
