Bianca loses bid to clinch Apga senatorial ticket in Ojukwu's Anambra South Senatorial District

BIANCA Ojukwu has lost her bid to become the All Progressives Grand Alliance (Apga) senatorial candidate in the Anambra South Senatorial District after losing in the party's primary elections which held earlier today.

High profile and widely respected, Bianca, the widow of Apga founder Chief Emeka Ojukwu, was once Miss Nigeria and has served as Nigeria's ambassador to both Spain and Ghana. Since she announced her decision to run, however, there have been objections to Bianca's candidacy, including from Ojukwu's children have opposed the plan saying it would not be proper to allow a woman from Ngwo, in Enugu State, to represent Anambra South Senatorial District.

Although Bianca  had the support of one of the richest men in Anambra State Dr Godwin Maduka and former Imo State governor Ikedi Ohakim, feelers from the party had it that Dr Ubah, the chairman of Capital Oil and Gas, was being favoured to grab the ticket. It had looked like Bianca would sail through after Chief Ubah was disqualified by the party earlier in the week.

However, as it happened, today Bianca was beaten by Prince Nicholas Ukachukwu in the keenly contested primary held at the Ekwulobia township stadium in Aguata. In the close contest, Bianca polled 177 votes to Prince Ukachukwu’s 211, bringing about an end to her senatorial ambitions.

There was a heavy shooting at the venue of the primary before the election, which disrupted proceedings for a while. However, peace was later restored at the Ekwulobia Stadium under heavy security as the Anambra State police commissioner Garba Umar was personally there to ensure there was no breach of the peace.
