One person dies as Tambuwal's motorcade is attacked in Sokoto as PDP and APC thugs clash

SOKOTO State governor Aminu Tambuwal recently survived an attack by armed thugs after his motorcade was set upon by hoodlums in an assault that led to the death of one person following the clash between the attackers and the security forces.

Deputy Superintendant of Police Cordelia Nwawe, a spokesperson for the Sokoto State Police Command, one person died from stray bullets fired when hoodlums attacked Governor Aminu Tambuwal’s motorcade in Sokoto yesterday. She added that one other person who was injured during the incident had been hospitalised.

Apparently, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had organised a reception rally to welcome Governor Tambuwal back to Sokoto after his failed attempt to secure the party's 2019 presidential ticket. He was received by a crowd of supporters at the Sultan Abubakar III International Airport, Sokoto and drove from there in a motorcade to Government House, Sokoto.

However, the event was not-hitch free as political thugs armed with dangerous weapons destroyed billboards, building structures and vehicles bearing inscriptions of the All Progressives Congress (APC).  A car bearing the APC logo and painting travelling to Sokoto from Bodinga was also set ablaze by mobs near the Sokoto State University.

Governor Tambuwal's motorcade was then forced to stop along Gawon Nama, near the residence of Senator Aliyu Wamakko, when another set of mobs carrying arms confronted it. Following the ugly incident, it took the efforts of security operatives to get the convoy moving again as it appears that supporters of both parties were out for a bloody fight.

Apparently, the deceased, Imran Ahmad-Alkanci, was on his way home after visiting family relations when the incident happened. It is believed that the 22-year-old was trying to get a commercial motorcycle when the bullet hit him.
