MEMBERS of the Kano State House of Assembly have set up a seven-man ad hoc committee to investigate the authenticity of a video clip in which Governor Abdullahi Ganduje was seen receiving a bribe from a contractor.
Over the last week, the video, originally published by online media platform Daily Nigerian, has been trending on social media. In the short clip, the governor is seen receiving wads of dollars from a man said to be a contractor and stuffing them into his clothing in what critics say was a bribe to secure a government contract.
Governor Ganduje has dismissed the video as fake and as a forgery but to get to the bottom of the matter, the Kano State House of Assembly has decided to act and ascertain the truth. Yesterday, the seven-man committee was constituted following a motion of urgent public importance filed by the member representing Warawa constituency Hon Labaran Madari and seconded by the member representing Kano Municipal constituency, Hon Baffa Danagundi.
Hon Madari pointed out that the House has the mandate to investigate any matter in order to ensure peace and harmony in the state. Majority leader Hon Baffa Babba Danagundi advised the government to halt legal moves to stop the probing of the matter as the Kano State House of Assembly has a mandate to investigate any matter of public concern, with the aim of ensuring peace and harmony in the state.
After most members of the House approved constituting the committee, it was inaugurated by Hon Kabiru Rurum, the speaker of the Kano State House of Assembly. Tasking the members to do their job diligently, Hon Rurum urged the committee to investigate the matter and submit its report back to the House within one month.
