AN unidentified man believed to be a Nigerian facing deportation from the UK is said to have jumped to his death at Heathrow Airport just as immigration officials were leading him towards a plane to take him to Lagos.
Over the weekend, the man was being escorted to a plane to deport him to Nigeria but in the early hours of Saturday decided to take his life rather than face deportation. He jumped down from the level from where he was to the one below and died instantly.
Of late, the UK has been very aggressive with its deportation programmes, stepping up the arrest and deporting of Nigerians who have overstayed their leave in the country. Under a series of Home Office initiatives, raids are even conducted across London and Nigerians found not to have up-to-date papers.
As part of a programme to reduce the number of Nigerians in the country, the Home Office has even entered into a prisoner exchange programme with the Nigerian Ministry of Internal Affairs. This involves the UK building a new wing at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Lagos to house Nigerian prisoners who can be deported to serve at the remainder of their sentences back home.
