Buhari replaces Brigadier Boroh with Dokubo as head of Presidential Amnesty Programme

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has sacked Brigadier Paul Boroh as the coordinator of the Presidential Amnesty Programme in the Niger Delta and replaced him with Professor Charles Quaker Dokubo.

According to Femi Adesina, President Buhari's spokesman, Professor Dokubo is currently the director of research and studies at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA). He said Professor Dokubo obtained a PhD in Strategic Studies from the University of Bradford, UK, adding that the academic hailed from Abonema in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State.

He also said the president had instructed the national security adviser to carry out a thorough investigation into the activities of the Amnesty Programme from 2015 till date, especially allegations of financial impropriety and other acts which he said were alleged to be detrimental to the objectives of the Presidential Amnesty Programme. Also yesterday, the president announced his plan to inaugurate the National Food Security Council and listed other prospective members of the council to include ministers, governors, members of security agencies and key stakeholders in agriculture.

For now, it appears inconceivable that the Niger Delta could descend into violence and anarchy again following the introduction of the amnesty programme. Originally introduced by President Umaru Yar'Adua, the amnesty programme involved militants handing in their weapons in exchange for a pardon.
