SUPER Eagles winger Henry Onyekuru is looking forward to returning to action next month for his club Anderlecht when the Belgian play-offs begin to determine who wins the country's Jupiler league.
Owned by English Premiership side Everton, Onyekuru, 20, is one of Nigeria's brightest prospects, who has been loaned out to Belgian giants Anderlecht. In December, he sustained a serious knee injury during a league match against one of his former clubs KAS Eupen and initial reports suggested his season was effectively over and that could also mean his hopes of playing at the World Cup in Russia.
However, the dashing winger has since returned to training and is hoping to see some action that could mean him still making Nigeria's World Cup squad. Under Belgium's complicated league structure, the top six teams from the regular season enter the championship playoffs, with the first-placed team winning the championship.
Currently at Everton to recuperate, Onyekuru is hoping to participate in these play-off and gain full fitness in the process. He will, however, miss Nigeria's two friendly games against Poland and Serbia due to take place later this month on the 23td and 27th.
Onyekuru said: “I have started kicking the ball already so I should be back to full fitness in a fortnight. I am expected to recuperate in 16 weeks before playing games and it will be 14 weeks on the 31st of this month and the remaining two weeks left, I’ll observe it in Anderlecht with the team before games."
Meanwhile, Nigeria's Group D match against Argentina on June 26 in Saint Petersburg has been sold out. Seen as a clash of the titans, the match appears to be highly anticipated and is seen as one that will determine the group winners.
