NIGERIAN-born teenager Miguel Azeez has been promoted to Arsenal first team ahead of the team's English Premier League match against Leicester City at the to the Emirates Stadium today.
Miguel, 19, who was once tipped to become a first team star in future, has been playing for the development squad since returning to Arsenal this season after going out on loan. His loan spell at Portsmouth did not go according to plan and he was recalled from the League One club during the January transfer window.
Born in England to a Nigerian father and a Spanish mother, Miguel is eligible to play for England, Spain and Nigeria He has represented England at under-16, under-17, under-18, under-19 and under-20 levels but is yet to decide where his senior international loyalty will lie.
Femi Azeez, 20, Miguel's older brother plays as a professional footballer for Reading. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has monitored Miguel, the Hale End Academy graduate with a view to his inclusion in the matchday 20 that will be named for today's game.
Azeez's first and only call-up for a Premier League game was on April 11, 2021 when he was an unused substitute in a game against Sheffield United. Today, it is unlikely Azeez will see any action either as Thomas Partey, Granit Xhaka, Albert Sambi Lokonga and Mohamed Elneny who are all ahead of him in the pecking order of central midfielders, are available for selection.
