Wike's camp of PDP G5 governors fly to Madrid for another meeting on Atiku's candidacy

FIVE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governors now known as the G5 have flown out of Nigeria for Spain where they are planning to hold a meeting to discuss what they do about their opposition to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar as the party's presidential candidate.

In May, the PDP elected Alhaji Abubakar as its flagbearer for next year's presidential election at its annual convention in Abuja. He has since picked Delta State governor Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate, which has caused some consternation in the camp of Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, as some party members expected him to be selected.

Despite several meetings between the Atiku and Wike camps to resolve the impasse, the matter has not been sorted out and Senator Ayu remains in office. Governor Wike is backed by governors Seyi Makinde  (Oyo), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu) and together they are known as the G5.

On Friday, the G5 group of governors travelled to Spain for a crucial meeting in Madrid, after laying more allegations against party chairman Senator Iyorchia Ayu.  They have insisted that until Senator Ayu resigns his position as party chairman, they will not back Alhaji Abubakar in the 2023 election.
