Calvin Bassey now a doubt for Friday's clash against Portugal; after he picks up injury

AJAX centreback Calvin Bassey is now a doubt for Nigeria's Friday's friendly game against Portugal after being substituted at half time yesterday during an Eredivisie league match against Emmen.

So far this season, Bassey has been a revelation for Ajax as they battle it out for the Dutch league title with Feyenoord and PSV Eindhoven. Basse4y, 22, joined Ajax from Glasgow Rangers in the summer and has since cemented his placed as one of Ajax's most trusted centrebacks.

For the Super Eagles too, Bassey has made the transition to centreback from leftback and is now the rock at the heart of the Nigerian defence. He was certain to start against a star-studded Portugal side who Nigeria face on Friday in a pre-World Cup friendly but is now a doubt after picking up an injury in Ajax’s 3-3 draw against Emmen yesterday.

Due to the injury, Bassey was taken off the pitch in the 40th minute  for treatment and returned a few minutes later. However,  he got replaced at half-time by Netherlands international Daley Blind.

Already, Super Eagles coach Jose Peseiro is without the services of Ola Aina, Zaidu Sanusi, Jamilu Collins, Semi Ajayi and Leon Balogun all as a result of injuries. Friday’s friendly will be played at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon.
