10 things our new president should do to address the current spate of insecurity in Nigeria

[1] Establish a special Kidnapping and Firearms Bureau (KFB). It will be an elite police agency kind of like the US Alcohol Tobacco and Firearms Bureau 

[2] Have the KFB train special 1,000  tracker dogs who will be able to track kidnap victims with ease 

[3] Pass laws that will make paying ransom fees a criminal offence. Legally, it is colluding with the kidnappers 

[4] Establish special mobile anti-kidnapping courts to try kidnappers everywhere, including in their hideouts if possible

 
[5] Increase the size of the Nigeria Police Force to 650,000 from the current figure of around 400,000. There is simply no way that the current police force can curtail the activities of 13m people left with no other opportunities in life but crime 

[6] Increase minimum police pay to N100,000 a month 

[7] Pass a security bill compelling every local government area to install CCTVs in public places like train stations, bus garages, schools, universities, etc 

[8] Provide helicopter escorts for inter-state train travel 

[9] Handing security votes currently paid to state governors to the police 

[10] Introduce a special local church and mosque tax of about 5% and hand this cash to divisional police officers. These are the bodies with the liquid cash and there are enough of them to generate a handsome sum
