That saying “Every people get the government they deserve” is probably more applicable to Nigeria than any other nation on earth

Ayo Akinfe

[1] Wale Adeyemo, the US deputy treasurer is 41 years old

[2] Kemi Badenoch, the UK’s trade secretary is  43 years old

[3] In an ideal world, these should be the two candidates running in Nigeria’s presidential election next month

[4] Wale is a liberal with the Democratic Party of the US

[5] Kemi is a right wing conservative with the British Tory party

[6] A contest between them would actually be a genuine ideological debate about the issues

[7] In contrast, the two front runners in Nigeria’s election next month are a pair of elderly gentlemen old enough to be their dads who have no policies or ideological stances on the issues

[8] Whoever wins next month’s election in Nigeria is not actually obliged to do anything as they have not committed themselves to any programme of action. The contest has been totally devoid of content

[9] We can blame the politicians as much as we like but the fact remains that Atiku and Tinubu did not become the presidential candidates of Nigeria’s two main parties by accident. They were voted for because they dropped dollars while rival candidates who came up with manifestos were shunned

[10] There are 109 senators in Nigeria’s National Assembly. If you went to Oshodi market and picked 109 Nigerians at random, you will find out that their characters are a mirror image of that of the senators
