DUTCH airline KLM has revealed that the body of a dead stowaway believed to be a Nigerian man was discovered under the wheels of one of its Boeing 777 aircraft that landed at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport yesterday.
Apparently, the plane flew from Lagos to Canada before proceeding to Holland and it was not until it landed in Amsterdam that the body was discovered attached to the wheel of the aircraft. It is also not clear in which city the man climbed into the landing gear mechanism and no crime is suspected for now.
A Royal Netherlands Marechaussee spokesperson said: "The investigation is still ongoing and we are trying to find out the identity of the victim so that the family can be informed. On longer flights, temperatures can go down to minus fifty degrees, making it impossible to survive.”
It is still unknown how the undocumented passenger found his way into the aircraft but an inquiry has commenced. It is believed that the man might have died from hypothermia, a medical emergency that occurs when the body loses excess heat.
According to the Royal Dutch Marechaussee, the national force of the Netherlands, performing military and civilian police duties, stowaways survive sometimes but do not in most cases. It added that most of the time, things goes wrong given the sharp drop in temperatures.
