MEMBERS of the Borno State religious police the Hisbah spent the Eid Mubarak festivity holidays out on the town enforcing strict adherence to Muslim ways by cutting the hair of young men whose haircuts were deemed un-Islamic.
Borno is one of 12 states in northern Nigeria has Sharia laws in place but up until now the state has refrained from introducing them forcefully. More than any other state on Nigeria, Borno has suffered from the effects of religious extremism with Islamic sects Boko Haram and the Islamic State in West African Province waging insurgencies against the government as they seek to establish an Islamic caliphate.
Over the weekend, the Borno State Hisbah Command was out shaving the heads of young men across the state. According to the religious police, their actions were justified as its personnel carried out the task of monitoring the interaction of young men and women in the state during Sallah.
Hisbah commander, Abdurrahaman Musa, said: "Our army is determined to see that the young people come up with new and inappropriate habits during the prayer ceremony. We gave the children a haircut because the haircut on the children’s head is contrary to morals and morals and the culture of Borno State.”
