GLASGOW Rangers have had their bid for Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers rejected by his Italian club Cremonese who considered the offer not substantial enough as they want at least £6m for the forward.
Premiership giants Rangers are looking to sign Dessers during the forthcoming summer transfer window as they seek to mount a challenge for the title next season. During the season just gone, Dessers has had a campaign to forget as newly-promoted Cremonese have been abysmal, picking just four wins from 37 games in the Serie A and have subsequently been relegated to the Serie B.
Dessers has scored seven goals in 29 games for the Grigiorossi but unfortunately, his goals have done little to help his side, as he looks set to for the second tier of Italian football. Rangers have thus sought to prize him away but Cremonese have rejected their bid as the club wants to at least recoup the £6m it paid Belgian side KRC Genk for his services last summer.
Rangers have identified Dessers as a suitable replacement for the departed Alfredo Morelos and he is also admired by the club's manager Michael Beale. Dessers, 26, made a name for himself in the Dutch Eredivisie where he won the Golden Boot in the curtailed 2019/20 season, scoring 15 goals for Heracles Almelo.
He also won the Europa Conference League award while playing on loan with Feyenoord during the 2021/22 season. Rangers, however, remain in talks with Cremonese despite their first bid being turned down, as they are in desperate need of reinforcements.
Rangers finished the season trophyless and are in the process of revamping their squad ahead of next season’s campaign. Last month, the club confirmed that five out-of-contract players, including Alfredo Morelos and Ryan Kent, are set to depart from Ibrox this summer, so they are actively in the market to replenish their squad as they are eyeing winning silverware next season
Already, Rangers have sealed deals for Kieran Dowell and Dujon Sterling and they are still working on moves for several players, including Jack Butland and Jose Cifuentes. It remains to be seen now whether the club can strike a deal for Dessers or turn their attention elsewhere in their bid to bolster their attacking options.
