Italian champions Napoli eye a move for Leicester City's Wilfred Ndidi this summer

ITALIAN champions Napoli are eyeing a move for Super eagles anchorman Wilfred Ndidi with a view to signing him during the current transfer window in response to Leicester City's relegation from the English Premier League.

Ndidi, 26, is certain to be one of the players Leicester seeks to offload as the clubs looks to cut its wage bill following its relegation to the English Championship. If a transfer to Napoli happens, it will see Ndidi reunite with fellow Super Eagles teammate Victor Osimhen, whose future is also up in the air this summer.

With loan signing, Tanguy Ndombele possibly returning to parent club, Tottenham Hotspur, Napoli will look to fill the midfield gap left by the Frenchman and their sights are set on the Leicester City man. Just three seasons ago, Leicester City were serious challengers for the top four and they were very close to playing Uefa Champions League football again with a crop of very talented players with Ndidi pulling the strings in midfield.

At the time, he  was hailed as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League as well as one of the best in Europe. He was at times seen as one of the best Nigerians to ever play in the English top flight and if a big club wanted his services at the time, they would have had to pay top dollar to purchase him.

However, fortunes have changed for Ndidi and Leicester City. Last season was a disastrous one for the player and club as Leicester's remarkable eight year stay in the Premier League ended with relegation to the second tier of English football.

His poor form at club level has also affected his performances for the national team as he has not looked like the dominant force in the Super Eagles midfield for a long time. Right now, Ndidi’s stock has never been lower and Napoli may provide an opportunity to revive his career and recapture his best form.

Napoli are looking to poach another relegated midfielder in Ndidi, just like they did for Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa back in the summer of 2021/22 after Fulham’s relegation the season prior.  With one year left on Ndidi's contract, a sale to Napoli is probably the best resolution for both player and Leicester.
