FORMER President Muhammadu Buhari had flown out of Nigeria and located to London in the UK saying he needed to get out of his home town Daura because the large number of visitors he was receiving did not allow him to rest.
On May 29, President Buhari left office after serving for eight years and after handing over, he returned to his country home in Daura in Katsina State. However, his home became a Mecca for the Nigerian elite and political class as they thronged there on a daily basis, with many seeking to curry favour.
Saying that he wanted a bit of peace and quiet, President Buhari said he had no option than to travel abroad. It is not known when he will return to Nigeria but aides say the former president also wants to get out of the way to give the new government of President Bola Tinubu the space to operate.
Garba Shehu, President Buhari's spokesman, said: “He chose to go home in Daura hoping to find the type of quiet he wished for himself but realising that this was not the case, visitors trooping in morning, day and night, he moved out to a more distant place. It remains his wish that he be allowed to have his needed rest and for the Tinubu administration to have the right atmosphere to work on the realisation of the promises they made.”
