SUPER Eagles winger Cyriel Dessers has just signed a four year contract with Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers that will keep him at Ibrox until the end of the 2026/27 season in a deal said to be worth about €6.5m.
Dessers, 28, joins Rangers from Italian Serie B side Cremonese and the deal is now just waiting for international clearance from the Scottish FA. Although the transfer fee has not been disclosed, it has been widely reported that Cremonese will receive a guaranteed fee of €5m plus €1.5m in performance-related add-ons.
Rangers are being highly acquisitive at the moment and Dessers has become their sixth signing this summer after Jack Butland, Kieran Dowell, Sam Lammers, Dujon Sterling and Abdallah Sima. A widely travelled journeyman, Dessers has played for OH Leuven, Lokeren, NAC Breda, FC Utrecht, Heracles Almelo, Racing Genk and Feyenoord over the years.
During the season just gone, Dessers had a campaign to forget as newly-promoted Cremonese were abysmal, picking just four wins from 37 games in the Serie A and have subsequently been relegated to the Serie B. Dessers scored seven goals in 29 games for the Grigiorossi but unfortunately, his goals did little to help his side.
Dessers said: "I am really happy, it is a big relief to finally be here. There have been some long days and some stressful days but it is a great feeling to finally be here.
"The history of the club, the fans, the stadium, it's massive but next to that I look at what is here at this moment. I had really good talks with Michael Beale about his plans, the ideas of what he wants on and off the pitch and I thought that could be a really good fit for me and for the team so I am happy to be here."
With Racing Genk, Dessers won the Belgian Cup and was top scorer in the inaugural edition of the Uefa Europa Conference League and Dutch Eredivisie with Feyenoord and Heracles Almelo respectively. Rangers have identified Dessers as a suitable replacement for the departed Colombian striker Alfredo Morelos who has just left on a free transfer.
