Kano destroys 30 trailer loads of beer as part of crackdown on Christmas drinking

KANO State's religious police the Hisbah Board has seized and destroyed more than 30 trailer loads of beer as part of a crackdown on the consumption of alcohol under its opposition to liquor consumption.

Currently, there are 12 states across northern Nigeria that practise the strict Islamic Sharia code that forbids the consumption of alcohol. Kano, the most populated state in northern Nigeria, has one of the strictest Sharia codes and the Hisbah Board is charged with the responsibility of combating alcohol consumption.

Mallam Adamu Yahaya, the Hisbah Board spokesman, said that the cartons of beer were destroyed after being intercepted at Kalebawa on Danbata Road in the Dawakin Tofa area of the state. He warned those selling beer to stay within their limits but appealed to members of the public to be of good conduct and be one another’s keeper.

“The Kano State Law Number Four of 2004 has banned the manufacture and use of intoxicants in the state. Furthermore, an order was given by a magistrates’ court for us to go ahead with the exercise,” he added.
