Saraki on his way out of senate after he is floored in Kwara Central in APC landslide victory

SENATE president Senator Bukola Saraki has lost his seat in yesterday's National Assembly elections losing out to the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate Dr Yahaya Oloriegbe who polled 123,828 votes to Senator Saraki's 68,994 votes.

Regarded as a leading hate figure by the ruling APC having ditched them and joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Saraki was the target of a concerted campaign. Yesterday, the APC got its vengeance as a campaign based on the slogan "Otoge" meaning it is enough, succeeded in forcing Senator Saraki out as the lawmaker for Kwara Central Senatorial District.

Popularly known as Oloye in Kwara State, Senator Saraki has been a major player in the state since 1999, serving as governor between 2003 and 2011. His father Dr Olusola Saraki was also the former senate majority leader of the Senate and the chairman of the Kwara State chapter of the then National party of Nigeria.

His defeat spells the end of a political dynasty as he even lost in his political stronghold of Ilorin West Local Government Area. This morning, the returning officer of the Kwara Central Senatorial District Professor Olatunbosun Owoyomi, announced the results, revealing that Dr Oloriegbe won in all four local government areas within the constituency.

In Asa Local Government Area, Dr Oloriegbe polled 15,932 votes, compared with Senator Saraki's 11,252 votes. In Ilorin East Local Government Area, Dr Oloriegbe got 30, 014 votes compared with 14,654 for Senator Saraki.

In Ilorin West Local Government Area, Dr Oloriegbe polled 51,531 votes to defeat the senate president, who only managed 30,075 votes. The situation was the same in Ilorin South Local Government Area, where the APC senatorial candidate garnered 26,331 votes compared with the 13,031 votes garnered by Senator Saraki.

In what was looking like an all round bad day for the PDP in Kwara State, the APC’s candidates won the House of Representatives seats in Asa/Ilorin West and Ilorin South/Ilorin East Federal Constituencies. Apparently, there were wild jubilations in Ilorin when the results were announced with shouts of Otoge renting the air.
