Buhari promises to appoint more women and youths during his second tenure in tacit admission of nepotism

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari has promised to appoint more women and youths into sensitive positions during his second tenure in what appears to be an admission that his first terms was a closed shop wracked by nepotism.

Last Saturday, President Buhari was re-elected for another four year term which will start on May 29 when his current tenure ends. Amid criticism that his government was dominated by a narrow cabal made up of middle aged men of Fulani extraction during his first term, it appears that President Buhari intends to address this when the second term begins.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Women and Youths Presidential Campaign team dinner to celebrate his the re-election in Abuja, President Buhari acknowledged the significant role played by women and youths in his re-election. He said his administration would not disappoint them in the next four years of his administration but promised that only those with integrity and the interest of Nigeria at heart would be considered for appointments in the next cabinet.

President Buhari also called on Nigerian youths to embrace agriculture to ensure more food sufficiency and food export. He said more fertilisers were being made available to Nigerian farmers at a lower rate, which has resulted in the increase in agricultural production and a reduction of food imports.

In his speech, the president faulted the s16-year rule of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) which he said, wasted the nation’s resources. According to him, the country witnessed rampant infrastructural decay in spite of the huge resources earned during the period of PDP rule.
