Nnamdi Kanu says he was only granted bail so federal government could assassinate him

INDIGENOUS People of Biafra (Ipob) leader Nnamdi Kanu has claimed that he was granted bail by Justice Binta Nyako of the Abuja high court two years ago to pave the way for his assassination.

On April 15 2015, Justice Nyako granted Mr Kanu, who was facing charges of treason, bail after he had spent a year and seven months in detention. Mr Kanu subsequently broke his bail conditions and absconded to Israel and the UK, leading to Justice Nyako issuing a warrant for his arrest last week after he failed to appear in court.

According to Mr Kanu, Justice Nyako only granted him bail to pave way for his assassination by the federal government. He added that after he got wind of the plan and escaped, the judge was angry that he survived the assassination attempt, which is why she issued a bench warrant for his arrest.

In the ongoing trial, the Nigerian government has arraigned Mr Kanu and three others on a four-count amended charge before Justice Nyako. Questioning the jurisdiction of the court to order his arrest, Mr Kanu claimed that the trial judge was ignorant of the Nigerian constitution.

Mr Kanu added: “It’s now obvious Justice Binta Nyako only agreed to grant me bail as part of an elaborate ploy with the Nigerian govt to set me up for assassination. Her failure to investigate the military invasion of my home is clear confirmation that she is angry I survived the attack.

"Also, Section 36 sub-section 12 of the Nigerian Constitution prohibits the trial and conviction of anybody in a Nigerian court of any offence not written down. Secession or self-determination is not written down as an offence in Nigeria, so Binta Nyako is ignorant of the law."
