Rohr likely to make several changes for Sunday's final group game against Madagascar

SUPER Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr is planning to make several changes to his team when it files out against Madagascar on Sunday as he intends to rest several key players now that the team has qualified for the knock-out stages.

On Wednesday, the Super Eagles beat Guinea 1-0 in the second match in the ongoing African Cup of Nations, thanks to a 76th minute header from centreback Kenneth Omeruo. Having won their first game against Burundi by the same margin, the Eagles have now qualified for the Round of 16 but still have one match to play against Madagascar.

Despite being tournament debutants, Madagascar are doing very well, amassing four points from their first two games, drawing 2-2 with Guinea and beating Burundi 1-0. Likely to be formidable opponents, Madagascar cannot be taken likely but having already qualified, Mr Rohr will want to use the opportunity to try out several players who have not seen action so far.

In goal for instance, he is likely to give Ike Ezenwa his first start ahead of Daniel Akpeyi who has played both matches so far. He added, however, that the Eagles will seek to win Sunday's game and end up top of Group B with all nine points.

Mr Rohr added: “We have to ensure we finish off well against Madagascar in our last game to top the pool. Our performance against Guinea was good as we played really well though it was a tough game from Guinea.

“I am happy we could deal with the danger they posed and being the first into the round of 16 is a joy for us. We want to win the game but also give some players the chance to have time in the competition, so perhaps we will make a change in goal.”

After watching Madagascar, Mr Rohr said he admits that they look like a strong team but Nigeria has a strong squad. Apart from goalkeepers Ezenwa and Francis Uzoho, other players yet to see action include the injured Jamilu Collins, John Ogu and forwards Henry Onyekuru and Victor Osimhen.
