Dominic Iorfa claims his son's career at Wolves came to a standstill after he opted for Nigeria ahead of England

FORMER Super Eagles winger Dominic Iorfa has revealed that his son who bears the same name as him was sold by English Premier League Side Wolverhampton Wanderers because he opted to play for Nigeria ahead of England.

Dominic Iorfa Jnr, 24, took after his dad who once played for Queens Park Rangers and joined the Wolves academy at the age of 15. He broke into the senior team in 2013 and was instrumental in Wolves getting promoted into the Premier League but since the club had been in the top flight, his opportunities have waned.

From cementing his spot in the Wolves first team, Iorfa Jnr was finally shipped out on loan to Ipswich Town during the 2017/18 season. Upon his return from the loan spell where he did not get enough game time, he was once again confined to the bench and in the summer, he was sold to English Championship side Sheffield Wednesday for whom he now plays.

So far this season, Iorfa Jnr, who plays as a centreback, has been massive and was even voted as the club’s player of the month. He was once upon a time rated as one of the best upcoming defenders in English football when he made 42 appearances for Wolves during the 2015/16 season and his performance earned him a spot in the English U21 team.

He was later picked to train with the senior national team of England during one of their training session with many tipping him to be a future senior international. However, according to his father, all that changed when Iorfa Jnr met with Gernot Rohr, the Super Eagles head coach who came to Wolves to see then first choice goalkeeper Carl Ikeme.

According to Mr Iorfa, Mr Rohr ‎had a chat with his son, who declared his intention to switch his allegiance to Nigeria. He added that this did not go down well with the then Wolves coach who decided to drop his son from the first team for opting to represent Nigeria ahead of England.

He added: “You know Rohr came to Wolves and met with my son and Carl Ikeme. Since he learned that my boy wants to play for Nigeria, he has been benching him as he believes there is no need developing him for Nigeria."
