Trump supporters launch 2024 campaign group after Georgia recount reveals little or no difference

PRESIDENT Donald Trump could be on the verge of accepting that he is on the way out of the White House after his supporters launched a 2024 campaign group following recent reports from the state of Georgia revealed no change in the vote count there.

On November 3, Americans went to the polls and in a keen presidential race between President Trump of the Republican Party and former vice president Joe Biden of the Democratic Party, the contest looked deadlocked. In about five states, the contest was too close to call but after about a week, Mr Biden was declared the winner after sweeping several battleground states.

Mr Biden's victories in Georgia, Pennsylvania, Nevada, Arizona, Michigan and Wisconsin, gave him a total of 306 electoral college votes to President Trump's 232. In the popular vote too, Mr Biden secured 78.76 votes to President Trump's 73.1m votes given him a 51.9% share of the vote to the incumbent's 48.1%.

Despite this clear victory, President Trump has refused to concede defeat, claiming the polls were marred by electoral fraud. He has filed numerous lawsuits challenging the validity of the elections and in some states like Georgia, the Republican party has asked for a recount because the vote was close.

In Georgia where Mr Biden won 49.5% of the vote to President Trump's 49.2%, an automatic recount took place because of the slim 0.3% margin. A total of 5m ballots are being recounted by hand bur Mr Biden's lawyers have said that the recounting is not making any substantial difference in the final vote count.

Marc Elias, a prominent Democratic lawyer, said: “More Georgians voted for president-elect Biden than voted for President Trump. There is nothing that the recount’s going to do to change that.”

As of yesterday, 48 of the state’s 159 counties have finished their recounting of the ballots with either no change or minor shifts witnessed. According to Mr Elias, the differences were fewer than five votes in some instances and in four counties that have finished their recounts, there was no change whatsoever.

Despite the fact that the hand recount was ordered by Georgia’s Republican secretary of state Brad Raffensperger, President Trump described it a scam, meaning nothing. In Georgia the process is due to be completed on 20 November.

With it looking like the game is up for Donald Trump, his supporters have launched an online campaign for 2024 when the next elections are due. Having only served one term, President Trump will be eligible to run again in 2024.
