Young Spurs goalkeeper Joshua Oluwayemi invited to Eagles camp for Mexico friendly

TOTTENHAM Hotspurs' U23 goalkeeper Joshua Oluwayemi could man goal for the Super Eagles tomorrow when Nigeria take on Mexico at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum after he received a late call-up due to injuries in the squad.

Oluwayemi 20, rose through the Spurs academy system, becoming the club's regular U23 goalkeeper during the second half of 2020/21season after spending the first half of the campaign on loan at Maidenhead United. Earlier this week, the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) invited him to camp for tomorrow's game after Ikechukwu Ezenwa picked up an injury in training.

Due to visa issues, it became impossible to call up a Nigerian-based goalkeeper, so Oluwayemi will join John Noble of Enyimba and Stanley Nwabali of Lobi Stars as the three shot stoppers for the match. Organisers expect a full house at the 77,500-capacity stadium, which would make it the most-attended game globally since the easing of restrictions that followed the coronavirus pandemic.

NFF’s Fifa match agent, Jairo Pachon of Eurodata Sport confirmed that the game will kick off at 8pm Los Angeles time or 4am Nigerian time on Sunday. Already, the Nigerian delegation made up of 22 players and a number of officials, including the NFF general secretary, Mohammed Sanusi has arrived in Los Angeles.
