Buhari backs former Nasarawa State governor Abdullahi Adamu as new APC chairman

PRESIDENT Muhammadu Buhari is reported to have settled for the choice of former Nasarawa State governor Senator Abdullahi Adamu as the new All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman ahead of its forthcoming party convention.

Over recent weeks, the APC hierarchy has been at its other's throats over the 2023 elections and the ensuing selection process this will entail. First of all, it will mean electing a new set of party officials then it will mean selecting candidates to stand in next year's polls, taking into account all the regional ramifications.

Earlier this week, the APC state governors met with President Buhari and agreed among other things to zone the 2023 presidential ticket of the party to the south of the country. This meeting also ratified the March 26 national convention date as fixed by the caretaker/extraordinary convention planning committee and explored the option of consensus in picking candidates for various positions.

With the party chairmanship now formerly zoned to the three northern geo-political zone, Senator Adamu who governed Nasarawa State between 1999 and 2007, has emerged as the firm favourite. Senator Adamu has emerged as a consensus candidate despite the fact that he has seemingly unending cases with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

However, it is believed that Senator Adamu's rivals for the position will not give up without a fight, as the likes of Tanko Al-Makura, Saliu Mustapha and Sunny Dafe, are reported to have rejected the purported adoption.  In addition to the disavowal by other contestants, a group of concerned APC North West Stakeholders, has insisted that those aspiring to the chairmanship should be allowed to test their popularity, so the contest should be thrown open.
