PDP senators storm out of National Assembly giving Buhari six weeks to address insecurity or face impeachment

PEOPLES Democratic Party (PDP) senators walked out of the National Assembly today during a debate on insecurity to protest the inaction of the federal government on the matter threatening to initiate impeachment proceedings against President Muhammadu Buhari.

This afternoon the senators from Nigeria's main opposition party stormed out of the National Assembly complex in anger during the debate.  Senate minority leader, Senator Philip Aduda, said that they have given President Buhari six weeks to resolve terrorist attacks in the country or face impeachment.

He added that within the PDP caucus, the impeachment issue was raised during a two-hour closed-door session but the senate president, Senator Ahmad Lawan, was unwilling to allow the matter to be tabled at the plenary despite their agreement. According to Senator Aduda, it was necessary for the insecurity to be addressed immediately because, it is obvious that Abuja, the seat of the federal government is no longer safe.

Senator Aduda said: “We went into a closed-door session on the state of insecurity in Abuja and took cognisance that Nigeria is no longer safe Senate has recommended various measures and discovered that even Abuja is no longer safe.

“We agreed in the closed session that we will give President Muhammadu Buhari an ultimatum but the senate president Ahmad Ibrahim Lawan didn’t want us to raise the issue. However, we have issued six weeks for President Buhari to resolve insecurity or be impeached. We walked out of chambers in protest.”
