Armed gunmen launch another attack on Owo less than two months after church massacre

ARMED gunmen have once more attacked the Owo community in Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State  less than two months after the town was subjected to a gruesome massacre at the St Francis Catholic Church which left about 40 people dead.

On June 5, worshippers at the church were subjected to a mass shooting and bomb attack believed to have been carried out by the Islamic State West Africa Province (Iswap). Still recovering from the gruesome killings, Owo has been subjected to another attack as armed hoodlums opened fire at Folahami Junction, where a construction company called Craneburg Construction Company was located yesterday.

Apparently, they opened fire on everybody at sight, with eyewitnesses saying some explosive devices were also used during the attack. As of now, the casualty figure has not yet been ascertained but many people were said to be injured in the attack.

Funmilayo Odunlami, the Ondo State Police Command spokeswoman, confirmed the incident, pointing out that some people were injured in the attack . However, she also said it could not yet be confirmed if the attackers are terrorists or mere bandits.

Mrs Odunlami said: "Tonight, there was a shooting incident at Craneburg Construction Company Owo. Policemen are currently at the scene, victims have been taken to hospital and they are in stable condition.

"We cannot ascertain the casualty figure now and we also cannot say it was a terrorists’ attack with the use of explosives devices but tomorrow morning, the EID men of the command would go to the scene.”
