Nigeria currently sits ninth in Commonwealth Games medals with two gold and one bronze

NIGERIA's medal haul at the ongoing Commonwealth Games taking place in Birmingham in the United Kingdom rose to five this  morning after weightlifter Folashade Lawal secured the country's second gold in the 59kg event.

Now sitting ninth in the medals table with two gold and one bronze medal, Team Nigeria will be hoping to clinch more medals in boxing and table tennis today. Ms Lawal ensured that the Nigerian national anthem was sung for the second time at the games, setting a new Commonwealth Games record of 206kg in the women’s 59kg weightlifting event.

Celebrating her victory, an excited Folashade said while she prepared hard for the challenge, winning a gold medal was not so close to her expectation. Her victory came shortly after Edidiong Umoafia bagged a bronze medal in the men’s 67kg weightlifting event.

Adijat Olarinoye put Nigeria on the medal table on Saturday after winning the country’s first gold at the games in the women’s 55kg weightlifting event. Meanwhile, the men’s table tennis team have qualified for the semi-finals after coming from behind to beat Malaysia 3-2 in the quarter finals.

Following their remarkable comeback Nigeria's table tennis team will have to beat their Indian counterparts to book a spot in the finals and guarantee another medal for the country. England will play Singapore in the other semi final, with the winner of the two ties meeting in the final tomorrow.
