Team Nigeria adds two wresting and one para-shotput medals to its haul at Commonwealth Games

NIGERIA has added two wrestling hold medals to her haul at the ongoing Commonwealth Games taking place in Birmingham after  Odunayo Adekuroye and Blessing Oborududu emerged tops in their respective categories.

 

Adekuroye defeated India’s Anshu Malik 7-3 to win a gold medal in the 57kg category, while Oborududu defeated Canada’s Linda Morais 5-1 to secure gold in the 68kg category. Defending champion Adekuroye, defends her title and maintains her record of never losing a wrestling match at the Commonwealth Games since she won her first title in 2014.

 

Oborududu emerged tops in this same category four years ago in Gold Coast, Australia and so successfully defended her title too. In the women’s Freestyle 62kg category, Esther Kolawole won a bronze medal after successfully dispatching her Canadian opponent, Abbie Fountain.

 

Iyiazi Eucharia Njideka has also won a gold medal in the women’s F55-57 shot put at the games, claiming Nigeria’s eighth gold medal with a throw of 10.03 meters this morning. Her throw which is a record at the tournament, while compatriot Ugochi Constance Alam clinched the bronze with a throw of 9.30 metres.

 

Nigeria now sits in seventh place on the medals table with a total of 18 laurels so far. This includes eight gold, three silver, and seven bronze medals.
